family medicine retreat

Last weekend, all of the residents headed out for their annual retreat in Killeen, Tx.

They took care of resident business (whatever that entails) and then spent a bulk of their time team building and basically bonding.

(Stretching before the big kick ball game)

The residents are broken up into teams for work (Team A,B,C,D).

Each team was divided into colors for the weekend and they competed in various games and activities.

And this was taken extremely seriously.

These guys and gals wouldn't be competitive at all.

Team spirit was evident.

Each class did a little team building of their own

The camp even had a rock wall

which David thought would be fun to climb.

So David and Henry headed up and in David's words, "Henry scurried up like a squirrel"

and well, David...he did not : )

These fine fellows anchored him.

and with some encouragement he got up there. But swore he would never again.

A volleball game ended the events for the weekend.

Scores were tallied and Team D walked away winner of the 2012 retreat.

And while David (a proud member of Team A) might not have been on the winning team, I know for a fact he walked away even prouder to be part of this incredible group of residents.

Shrimp Boil

Tuesday night we held a shrimp boil in our backyard with the students in the Rural Medical Program. The dinner was in honor of Dr. Bill Coleman who is the director of the Rural Medicine Program at UAB. He not only practiced rural family medicine for more than 30 years, but also held the title of President of the American Academy of Family Physicians during the early 90's which shows his heart and contribution to family medicine. I think it is fair to say that Dr. Coleman has been influential in many careers. He is passionate about family medicine and the future of the field. He has spent time mentoring each one of them and I think it's fair to say they wouldn't be where they are today if it were not for him.

God held off the rain and provided perfect weather for our outside gathering.

Sam and Owen were the official taste-testers and first in line for the fruit.

David grilled some wild turkey with cream cheese and jalapeƱo wrapped in bacon.

Anything wrapped in bacon is hard to beat.

This was no exception and I think all the boys were big fans.

 Ty manned the shrimp boil.

Dr. Coleman tried his hand at sidewalk chalk and proved to be quite the artist.

If medicine doesn't work out for Ty, I think he and Brittany could safely open a restaurant and specialize in low country cuisine. It is definitely an art they have perfected.

We had quite the spread: broccoli cornbread, baked beans, southern caviar, fruit skewers, hummingbird cupcakes, cheesecake, and chocolate chip monkey bread. Jessica even went above and beyond with fresh squeezed lemonade.

After we feasted

the boys strummed a few tunes on their guitars.

I was telling Brittany, I think this group of guys are really one of a kind. Good people, with the hearts for helping people and making the world better, and can pick up a guitar and make beautiful music.

That is a special thing. Speaking of special, you must meet baby Ruby.

It was a great night...delicious food, fellowship among friends and classmates, little ones playing in the yard until the sun went down, watching lightning bugs, listening to the boys strum guitars.

So much focus has been put on school, test scores, residency programs, where you are going...it was nice to sit back, relax and be thankful for where they are now and who helped them get there.

Texas in her words

So, if you haven't heard....we are moving to Texas! The past few weeks we have gotten a few questions about this fact, so I thought I might share the rest of the story.

Why Waco, Texas? some might ask.

Well, we definitely did not predict 4 years ago we would be moving to Texas. Once David decided to do Family Medicine, we thought the easy or natural thing to do would be stay in Alabama. We have family here, we have a small child, it would be easy...comfortable. But last summer, God put it on David's heart to really look into the world of Family Medicine and explore what would be the very best training program for him. In July, David traveled to Kansas City for convention where he would have the opportunity to meet and talk with different family residency programs from across the country. He met with lots of people, learned more, got feedback about his resume, etc. While there, God led him to the people at the booth for Waco, TX. He came back talking about some of the programs and said Waco really seemed like a good program and the people were great.

In October David took 2 weeks to interview at 4 programs in Texas. Waco stole his heart. The people were David's kind of people. They took him fishing on Lake Waco, dinner at the home of residents. I just kept hearing excitement and eagerness in his voice.

I was a little skeptical at first. Waco? You want me to move 10 plus hours away for residency? Far away from family, friends we have made, a church we like? With a little one? But I wanted to give it a fair chance. So in January we road tripped to Texas, just the two of us. It was one of those times you just feel God paving the way. We were not too far out from Greenville, when we saw a complete rainbow. We pulled over to take a picture and just thought, how cool...God! God loves us and he is going to take care of us.

On the long drive, we had lots of time...we talked we analyzed and we thought we would catch up on some sermons from church. Our preacher, Pastor Mark, has been doing a sermon series on Fear. This particular sermon was on "Faith or Fear", you are welcome to listen here. He talked about how there are times in life we choose to have faith or fear. There may be something new, something unfamiliar, something we aren't as comfortable with...and we have a choice. Do we choose what is easy for us? Or do we choose what we might be scary...what we know we could not do without the help of God? Do you choose to have faith in God or hold on to that fear? Sometimes doing what is not easiest brings us closer to God...and isn't that what we want? He shared with us two different storms in the Bible:

That day when the evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
Mark 4:35-40

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on the mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Lord, if it's you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
Mathew 14:22-31

Very thought provoking? It was to us, especially to me. It made me think and prepare my heart for this trip. I saw what David liked about the program, they have so much to offer as far as training, procedures, facilities, faculty, and of course the people that he would be working with would be incredible. We met genuinely kind people who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and wanted. It still was not easy for me to let go. I remember sitting in the hotel room with my paper and pen, drawing out a calendar trying to figure out how to make it work...when we would see family? How often could we could come home? I was trying to make it work for me. Then I saw it in his eyes how much this really meant to him and how much he wanted it. He would be proud to be here. How could I say no?

David said something else that made the decision clear to me. "I feel I would grow as a person and grow closer to God being surrounded by people that would make me better here."

With lots and lots of prayer, peace came. We just felt a peace about it all. Then when David opened that envelope on Match Day, we were both so excited. Not scared, not sad...but excited and proud! I feel God has been preparing our hearts for this move. Even in the last few weeks through different conversations and situations, he has brought David and I even closer. I know this is part of God's plan. He is opening doors and we can feel his presence.

So Owen, when you look back at this blog book when you are much older and wonder why did Daddy go to Waco for residency? It wasn't necessarily for the training, or the money, or because it was easy...it was because that is where we felt God was leading us to go...and that is what is important.

submitted

The rank list is done...submitted.

In celebration, all of David's classmates in Huntsville and their families got together at Ginny's house to mark this occasion.

It was a really nice time to catch with those we don't see as often and even those that we do ; ) This is "Mr. Jess" who is going into Orthopedic Surgery and "Ms. Katie" going into General Surgery.

And what do you know, the band, Enriched White Hominy even made an appearance.

These guys are going to make for some pretty amazing doctors...

If they can't medically make you feel better,

just let them sing you a little tune.

Here they are, you are looking at your future ENTs, Orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, ER docs, Internal Medicine, and family physicians from the Huntsville campus.

Such a nice looking group of people, who wouldn't want them to be your doctor?

We'll see you March 16th for Match day! Exciting times!

Interview Trail SC

We hit the interview trail a couple of weeks ago with David for two interviews in South Carolina. We headed out right after we got home from Thanksgiving in Jackson. We were in Huntsville long enough to unpack, wash clothes and repack. Owen did AMAZINGLY well traveling. David and I know he is a pretty good traveler...but being in the car for 7 hours in one day is alot for a kiddo. On our way there we drove up through Tennesee. It was a pretty drive through the mountains and actually came out in North Carolina and drove down to Spartanburg for interview Number 1.

our travel buddy:

I will say Owen went a little crazy when we got to our hotel room. He ran from one end to another squealing, playing with the closet doors and pulling the toilet paper from the roll and running with it...I suppose he had ALOT of pinned up energy.

Luckily for Owen and me, we had some friends in Spartanburg that were gracious enough to let us hang out with them while David went to dinner with the residency program. Jennifer and Willis were so sweet to welcome us in their beautiful home and even fed us Owen's favorite: pizza! Jen and I were ADPi's at Auburn and Willis also went to school at Auburn and he is now completing his surgical residency in Spartanburg.

Owen was a pretty big fan of their dog, Cammie.

Fun fact: Spartanburg is home to Denny's headquarters.

Sadly, I have no more pictures of Spartanburg. It was rainy and cold so we didn't get out to much.

Then we moved on to Greenwood for interview Number 2.

Greenvwod was a lovely little town. Everyone was very friendly and we spent a couple of days there so we really got a feel for the town. We actually ate at the restaraunt above twice. Great pizza, if you are ever in Greenwood you should try it out.

I am glad David let us tag along for part of his journey on the interview trail. This is just such a complex decision he has to make in the upcoming months. Looking forward to seeing where God will lead us.

Sandestin Family Medicine Trip

Last week, we made a trip down to Sandestin for a Family Medicine Conference.

Owen got sick while we were there (like 104 degree fever sick), but we managed to have a little fun.

He was feeling better by Friday night, so we went out with the Bobos to celebrate Steven's birthday at the Red Bar.

Here is the birthday boy himself with his beautiful wife.

...do you see my little man? He is saying " I can do it myself. I do not need to hold your hand."

He is independent, what can we say.

He likes the beach...

likes the sand

likes the water

likes petty much everything about it

...fearless I say

We enjoyed our 30 minutes on the beach and then headed in for the banquet.

We finally met up with our friends. Here are the future doctors and the sons...(Owen still looks a little puny)

David's classmates even happened to be the entertainment for the night!

The babies enjoyed dancing and everyone really enjoyed the bluegrass/rock-n-roll mix. They really were good : ) If this doctor thing doesn't work out, they could probably get a gig somewhere.

We had big plans of pool time and beach fun with our friends. Sadly that did not happen, but we did get to ride the carousel.

...a memorable trip nonetheless.
