building a raised bed

 One project we have had in mind since we bought the house, was building a raised garden in the back. There is a low spot in the backyard that was just calling out for a raised bed.

One thing I love about David is that he doesn't just talk about projects...he does them. This was no different. He researched online, talked to Dr. Bobo and Dr. Slagley about their raised beds and then started mapping out our future garden. The dimensions are 8'x4'.

 We dug and cleared out the grass. David had to do some extra digging to level out the ground for our boards.

David found a great deal on cedar, so we went with that to build our bed. Luckily he had a little tool man to help him out.

The bed is approximately 12 inches high.

 Coop was right there to offer his assistance too. Don't let him fool you,  he really just wanted to gnaw on that fragrant cedar wood.

It got a little hot with the sun beaming down on us, so we made a "fort" as we told Owen to shield us from the sun.

 By the end of day one, things were shaping up.

David dared me to put a level on it...it was that precise.

Day 2 we were ready to get serious and fill this bed up.

 We laid down some weed cloth to prevent any pesky weeds from crawling in our garden.

Then we hauled in some dirt...the radio flyer came in handy. We have a mixture of organic compost, garden soil, mushroom compost, and top soil. 

We planted cucumbers (really half the garden is cucumbers, we didn't realize how many we bought), tomatoes, red bell pepper, poblano pepper, garden salsa pepper, zucchini, rosemary, sweet basil, thyme, and parsley.

We may have gotten a little later start than most, but we are having fun planting and putting the garden together. I think Owen will like watching it grow and especially the picking part.

We laid down a layer of mulch and a soaker hose to finish it off and then our project was complete.
