little fish

I mentioned that Owen and I were taking swimming lessons at the YMCA. David got to tag along today and captured a few pics of what we do in class.

The main objective of the class is to introduce kids to the water so they are not afraid. Well, Owen is definitely not afraid. This little fish is not bothered one bit about going under and getting his face wet. He is independent and wants to do it all by himself.
Today we took our lessons in the outside pool where they have a shallow area.

Let's be honest...the kids basically played.

We have quite the range in ages in our class...from 6 months to just over 2 years.

We work on things like kicking,

blowing bubbles, floating (Owen doesn't like to float), pulling up out of the pool, jumping off the wall, and using our arms to pull the water all while singing little songs and nursery rhymes.
But let's be real again. Owen is almost two, he could care less about all of those things and just wants to PLAY!

But really, isn't that what the main goal of the class is: for your child to enjoy being in the water.

So in that case, we are passing with flying colors.

  1. What fun!! I want to come to yall's swimming class :) Owen looks like he's having a ball and even though he's not real interested in the fundamentals, I think it's great that he's being exposed to them now. He'll be an independent little swimmer before you know it!
